SUSTAINABILITY MINING

Can mining and sustainability go together or is the concept of sustainability mining an impossible partnership? The issue of sustainability, where the mining industry is concerned, has already been given much awareness. Mining has received many raps just as equally as environmental concern has been raised in the past and still continues to do so, which is why another focus of the industry is now on sustainability mining. With the awareness and measures in place, there is a promising continued future for the industry so long as sustainability mining is not forgotten or forsaken.

For this particular sector, sustainability involves proper management of mineral resources while considering the impact on economy, environment and society. The sector also accepts the fact that their industry can be abusive of natural resources, which is why there is a constant need to include sustainability mining measures in the decision-making process. What sustainable mining wants to achieve is balance for the sector, the environment and society so that there is less wastage, less energy consumption, and less harmful emissions resulting from operations. What sustainability mining also wants for the industry is more public awareness on how the industry is continuously finding ways to preserve the environment despite the continued harvesting of minerals, fuels and other resources. Sustainability mining also aims for long-term operations of the industry so long as there are long-term measures for preservation of the environment, and for initiating improvements on current practices that need change or improvement.

Skeptics still believe that one cannot fully apply sustainability concepts to the mining sector. This is because the resources in question, minerals and fuel, cannot easily be renewed. Another million years is needed in order for the process of replenishment to be completed. But the sector has taken the necessary steps to rectify this notion, proving that sustainability mining can be somehow be applied to the industry and benefits can actually be derived. Those who support the mining sector argue that the world cannot do without this industry just yet for it has provided significant impact both for the economy and society. At least with sustainable mining, the environment can also be given due recognition.
